A big welcome to Sort Group, Ben! We hope you’re settling in well.

Where did you first hear about Sort Group, and what attracted you to joining us?

The Sort Group is a solid company with sound values and a good approach to software development.

What did you do before joining us?

I was a software developer at Stickee Technology.

What is your favourite part of your new role?

Here at Sort, I get to work with a very talented team of developers. I will be able to learn from colleagues and broaden my skill set.

What does your typical working day look like?

I start my day in the team standup, which is a great opportunity to catch up with everyone. Then, I spend the rest of the day working through user stories, planning features, helping others and writing code. To the casual observer, I frown at a computer screen and press buttons.

How do you like to keep busy in your spare time?

I enjoy “The Great Outdoors” and spend most weekends whizzing around the woods on my bike or walking around on top of a hill somewhere. I also like to sit indoors and tinker with computers, and make terrariums.

Who inspires you and why?

I’m inspired by a mountain biker called Martyn Ashton, he was a successful trials champion whom became paralysed after a motorcycle accident. Since the accident, he has become a well-known YouTube personality who continues to ride using adaptive bikes and offroad wheelchairs.

What’s your favourite ‘guilty pleasure’ song?

Grove is in the heart by Deee-Lite

Are you a dog or cat person?

Yes, but mostly cats. I’ve ended up with three of them somehow.

Tell us something few people know about you?

I can juggle, and I have pet ants (lots of normal people have pet ants).

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the tech industry?

Find aspects of technology that excite you and try to focus on them. You shouldn’t always follow the crowd or do what’s more popular at the moment. It’s important to listen to others but form your own opinions.

Ben works in Sort Group's inhouse development team, working on all of our bespoke built technology.
